Seamus Hoyne visited the Budapest Climate Agency

We had the pleasure of hosting Seamus Hoyne, the pioneer behind one of Europe’s earliest energy agencies.

ManagEnergy is an initiative of the European Commission to support climate and energy agencies. It aims to help these agencies lead the energy transition and accelerate sustainable energy investments in regions and cities.

The article on the European Commission website can be found here.

On the occasion of the ManagEnergy Expert Mission, Seamus Hoyne was welcomed by the newly created Budapest Climate Agency, which has ambitious climate neutrality plans. The aim of the visit was to strengthen the city's climate strategy and to set the direction for well-functioning investment programmes and energy services.

"It is a great recognition for us to be one of the 28 agencies selected as a stop on the Expert Mission. We have ambitious plans and the insights we have gained from these discussions will help us chart our course. Being part of a European community of more than 350 agencies is important to us and our team will continue to work hard to achieve Budapest's climate goals."
— Ada Ámon, Executive Director, Budapest Climate Agency

Laying the foundations for success

Established in 2024, the Budapest Climate Agency will play a key role in achieving Budapest's climate neutrality goals by developing investment programmes, public services and partnerships. It is still at an early stage, but a diverse team of experts is already in place. The mission has been able to help outline the strategic steps needed to move forward.

Focus on deep renovation

The Mission focused on the Budapest Climate Agency's EU-funded investment programme to reduce carbon emissions and improve quality of life through the modernisation of apartment buildings.

Looking ahead: solid fuel replacement and further plans

The mission also looked at the Agency's plans to replace solid fuel heating equipment, which is expected to have significant environmental and health impacts.

“I am leaving beautiful Budapest feeling very confident in the abilities of the Budapest Climate Agency team to deliver on its ambitions and to drive the climate and energy transition in the city. Evidence from across Europe confirms that regions that have energy agencies as independent, agile and driven are delivering on European, National and Regional climate and energy goals.” — Seamus Hoyne, ManagEnergy Expert, Dean of Flexible and Workplace Learning at the Technological University of the Shannon and Chair of the Tipperary Energy Agency
